It seems to be a trend - If you look at it, there have been more than a couple that are bridging the gap from one movie to the next with animated movies or features.
There was Animatrix which set the stage that it could be done, then following have been MTV;s Spider-man which is supposed to fill in the gaps between movie 1 and 2 to some degree, and they plan to follow with another animated sereis anf the second to lead into the third movie.
There is also the Clone Wars, and then the two recent shorts which have been mentioned - Van Helsing and CoR. I bought and watched the Van Helsing: London Assignment and for a 35 minute animation it was really good. Used the voice of the actor (Jackman) so it is going to tie in well with the movie.
There has also been talk of a few more that I have read here and there leading into movies coming out later in the year and next year.
I think it is a good trend as it lets people see in a short film the type of story they are going to go see if they see the movie, and allows a semi-judgement prior to being thrown into the overall movie experience.

as for vin fans..I don't know many. my boyfriend has hated him ever since fast and the furious and pretty much every movie following that, cause he keeps playing the same "badass extreeeeme tough guy" role over and over.

You're right he DOES love the macho tough guy role, aside from The Iron Giant. Suprisingly I heard that he directed (I may be off on that) some short film that caught Spielberg's eye, which was why Vin was in Saving Private Ryan and works mostly in films under Dreamworks.
And I didn't even know that the actor that played Eomer was in Chronicles, at least there's another, less smurfier familiar face there.
